Ancillary Justice Gets Optioned For TV

...as explained on Leckie's blog. Usually I'm more terrified than enthused when a book I like gets optioned for any other medium, knowing how many ways it can be messed up, but she's clearly already thought about that and what sorts of things to talk about.

And maybe it'll come to nothing. But maybe it'll come to something awesome, and the Radch Imperium will be the hot new scifi show that we can all hipster about being into before it got to TV. Anyway. I'm enthused.

This is good, though things can sit at optioned status for years without progressing.

I can imagine the gender and skin-colour issues are going to be the cause of some interesting, and fraught, discussions between the production office and marketing - 'Waddaya mean everyone's a 'she', even the guys, and the higher class they are the darker their skin?'

Yeah, my hope is less "I bet it'll happen!" and more "If it ever does happen, it has a better chance than usual of actually being done well!"

I wonder if the "plump is beautiful" tidbit would manage to survive, too...

You would hope so, wouldn't you. It's almost a throwaway line on the page, but one that earworms your assumptions. Harder to pull off on screen as you would need people to actively articulate it.

And thinking about it makes me wonder if that isn't another part of Radch society that flows out from Aanander Mianaai.
